BELL RINGING IN RICHMOND THROUGH THE AGES – FOR ALL AGES
Ringing is for all ages. Our current youngest learner is 12 and our oldest reluctantly stopped ringing in his 90s. One of our ex-trainees, when aged 19, rang regularly at St Paul's Cathedral London. Bellringing is a sociable rewarding and voluntary pursuit suitable for all including those with disabilities.
The soundscape of our church bells has been an essential part of Richmond community life for 3 centuries. St Mary's parish documents record peals rung to celebrate the coronations, deaths and anniversaries of 5 monarchs, the safe return of regiments, the end of the Boer War and two World Wars and the passing of millennia. We have rung to celebrate music festivals, the Olympics, the Tour de France, royal, civic, guild and military occasions, weddings, funerals and Church services.
Our central position in the Dales and our expert local ringers, have made Richmond a training hub for Upper Dales' towers for 35 years.
Thanks to the generosity of so many we have been able to replace our bells and frame and display our historic bells in the belfry for all to see. Our project enables us to continue to practice and teach the tradition of change ringing into the next century and beyond and to explore, record and share with our community the wealth of historical and cultural associations of bellringing.
Listen here to the sound of the old Richmond bells celebrating the marriage of 2 of our ringers
Ringing practice takes place every Tuesday at 7:30 PM at Saint Mary's
All are welcome, and while It's never too late to start ringing, it's never too early either!
